The nurses, God bless them all. I think they’re angels in disguise. On March 16, Virginia was admitted to Winchester Hospital with COVID-19. She was put in isolation to prevent others from getting infected and was suffering from trouble breathing and running a fever. After Virgina’s diagnosis, Laurie Thibault, RN, reassured her and told her everything would be okay. Knowing her family wasn’t able to come visit, Laurie went out of her way to call Paula, Virginia’s daughter,... at the end of every shift. After 10 days, Virginia was healthy enough to be discharged and recover in the comfort of her own home with her family. Your support this year has helped the healthcare heroes of Winchester Hospital provide incredible and compassionate care to all of our patients. There’s still time to make a gift before the year ends! Visit https://bit.ly/3aEz6JS to give now.

Saturday shoutout to PEER award winner Darlene Bruen! Darlene was quick to offer a hand to Maternal Child Health and Surgical Services when they needed additional administrative assistance. She exemplifies teamwork in every encounter and her approachability promotes respect, not only for her colleagues but also for the work we do. Thank you, Darlene and congratulations!

Sue Powers, RNMS, Associate Director for the Center for Healthy Living, distinctly remembers her discomfort when her mother was undergoing treatment for breast cancer almost 20 years ago and couldn’t find a comfortable bra. We had nowhere to turn for help, Sue said, so I decided that I would find a way to create a safe space for women to shop for bras, wigs, and other items that would help them while undergoing cancer treatments. Now, A Caring Place helps patients with cancer feel normal again. #BreastCancerAwareness

Exciting news! Winchester Hospital placed 48th in the nation in the Lown Institute Hospital Index, which is a new kind of hospital ranking that evaluates hospitals’ performance based on how well they treat their patients, their commitment to providing high-value care, and their investment in community health. Winchester is one of only 10 Massachusetts Hospitals to rank in the top 100 nationwide.... We celebrate this recognition with every colleague and team member! Thank you for your hard work and dedication.

Healthy State rewind: One of our favorite stories from 2018! I’m not writing sonnets here, but it was something fun that made me feel pumped up and positive. It was one way I could keep my sense of humor.
