We are working closely with other members of Mass General Brigham to provide the latest information about #COVID19vaccines. Updates are made daily to this page: https://massgeneralbrigham.org/covid19/vaccine
Michele Hnath, R.N., NSMC Clinical Leader in the Intensive Care Unit, has now received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. She made history December 16, as the first staff member at NSMC to receive the vaccine. After researching the vaccine, she knew that it was the best way to protect herself, family and community from the virus.
NSMC and North Shore Physicians Group staff participated in multiple volunteer efforts yesterday to support and strengthen our community in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., Day and National Day of Service. Some of these individuals volunteered at My Brother's Table helping prepare meals for North Shore residents. Others baked cookies for My Brother’s Table and/or made cards and letters for our patients in the Epstein Center for Behavioral Health In the great words of MLK, Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘what are you doing for others?’. It’s humbling to see our staff internalizing this message.
NSMC Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine physician Dr. Richard Kahn was interviewed by WBUR this morning and asked about how the hospital is handling this current surge of COVID-19 patients. "We are better positioned now" than we were during the spring, he says. Salem Hospital saw so many critically ill patients during that time that we had to double our ICU-capacity in order to take care of everyone. This time around, member hospitals in the Mass General Brigham network ar...e practicing "level loading" as a strategy, which means sharing the patient load among the hospitals so that one hospital does not get overwhelmed. "In the last few weeks we have reached maximum capacity at the hospital, but we have been able to send some patients down to Mass General and Brigham and Women's Hospital, which has helped a lot.," Dr. Kahn says. Bob Oakes asked Dr. Kahn about how hospital staff is faring in the face of post-holiday surges. "Morale is definitely impacted," Dr. Kahn confirms. The fact that many people traveled and gathered indoors against all recommendations not to do so has directly led to a greater influx of patients with COVID-19. But at the same time the mood and spirits of our staff have recently been lifted by the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, now well underway for hospital staff. "One of our nurses in the ICU, Michelle Hnath, R.N., ICU, was the first person at NSMC to receive the Pfizer vaccine. I will remember that moment for all of us.... it gives us a great feeling of hope, not for now, but for the future, we see a future that may lead to some kind of normalcy for all of us." https://www.wbur.org//20/12/31/icu-capacity-surge-holidays
(Part 4 of 4) As we look forward to 2021, we are filled with optimism and hope knowing that our incredible staff will lead the way to a better and healthier future. They’ve fought COVID-19 with determination and drive and will continue to have the opportunity to receive the COVID-19 vaccination to better protect themselves and their families from contracting the virus. May we all experience a healthier, happier and safer new year. And as always, to all our incredible staff, thank you.
(Part 3 of 4)To say that our staff have been incredible this year would be an understatement. Our frontline staff went above and beyond as caregivers, often times taking on the roles of family and friends for those who were in the hospital with COVID-19. To adjust to the ‘new normal’ our staff have been innovative and creative to solve some of the biggest issues in our community. This includes volunteering at Care Kit Distribution events in cities throughout the North Shore, participating in virtual Town hall events to communicate with the cities we serve, and utilizing video chat services to connect family members with their loved ones. To all our incredible staff, thank you.
No one spreads more holiday cheer than our small NSMC Birthplace patients and their families. Take a look below at some of our 'holiday babies'.

He also shared several reasons as to why you should practice these prevention methods including: - They help prevent you from getting sick. - They help prevent you from getting other people sick, particularly those who are high-ri...sk. - It helps protect your community healthcare workers who worked tirelessly to treat and care for COVID-19 patients earlier this spring and summer. Worldwide, experts are urging everyone to get the flu vaccination, with this year being especially important to do so. Both COVID-19 and the flu can become a life-threatening respiratory illness for some patients. Protect yourself and your family by getting your flu shots as soon as you can. North Shore Physicians Group has been running flu clinics since early September (https://www.northshorephysicians.org/flu-clinics). If you are not an NSPG patient, speak to your primary care physician's practice to find out when they are providing flu shots. Staff in the NSMC Birthplace and Special Care Nursery (SCN) are going above and beyond to ensure our new moms and little ones feel especially safe and comfortable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gabriela Toussaint delivered her baby, Alondra, without a support person but received all of the support and encouragement she needed from her care team. Her care team even organized a video chat between Gabriela, her husband, Reggie, and her six-year-old daughter, Frida, to ensure the...y all were able to experience this special moment together. Melina Reyes-Mendoza gave birth 115 days early. Her daughter, Candi, required additional care and was treated by neonatology experts from NSMC's SCN and Massachusetts General Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Staff kept Melina informed and involved early step of the way, making her experience less stressful and enabling her to focus on her baby. Read their stories and the stories of our other moms here, https://bit.ly/2FWZhPl.
