Red Cedar Doors

Formerly placed in the Cedrela genus, Australian Red Cedar bears many similarities with Spanish Cedar (Cedrela odorata). Both species are in the Mahogany family (Meliaceae), and Australian Red Cedar is sometimes referred to as Indian Mahogany.


Scientific Name : Toona ciliata (syn. Cedrela toona)
Distribution : Southern Asia and Australia
Average Dried Weight : 485 kg/m3
Appereance : Heartwood color ranges from pinkish to a darker reddish brown. Paler sapwood is clearly demarcated from heartwood.
Texture : Grain is generally straight to slightly interlocked, with a coarse, uneven texture. Good natural luster.
Rot Resistance : moderately durable
Life expectancy :on the ground up to 10 years, above the ground 15-40 years

Working Properties:

  • Sawing is difficult as wood clogs saw teeth and dulls cutting edges.
  • Nailing: Good holding ability.
  • Good bending qualities.
