Earlier this year, Sarah, who has Down Syndrome, was admitted to Beverly Hospital with COVID-19. After 22 long days in the hospital with a few severe downturns, Sarah had miraculously survived. Sarah’s very near and dear to me and losing her was just not something I was ready to go through. But Sarah started to improve, eventually beco...ming well enough to go home. "Since April, all Beverly Hospital staff that showed up daily for the patients and to fight the unseen enemy showed the utmost courage. The community rallied an...d showed support which gave us all strength. Nursing became recognized as a valiant and valuable profession. Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, I contracted the virus myself a few weeks into my redeployment. Months later I am still battling my personal COVID struggle both physically and mentally, but have never been more proud to be a nurse." -Jeanetta Kumar, RN Beverly Hospital See more

We asked our colleagues to share how working during a pandemic may have impacted their mental health. Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay and we encourage you to prioritize your self and your mental wellbeing and seek help if you ever need it. "To say this year has been difficult is an understatement. As a nurse, I want to help and support others but I have realized that my mental health is important, too. Some days I need to step away by myself and feel my feelings and regroup. I may head outside to see the beauty in nature, watch the sunrise or sunset, snuggle with my dog or escape with a book on the porch. I have found these times help me to continue to see the good in others and to find the positive in each day." ~Kathleen Mahoney, RN
